Osama Bin Laden and the Creation of Al-Qaeda

As ordinary people, pundits, and renewed “patriots” flood the airwaves and internet feeds with their glorification for death, it is fitting to play a clip from BBC documentarian Adam Curtis, who researched the beginning of the shadowy group which has so significantly changed the lives of all conscious human beings in the last ten years.

Curtis explores how the United States funded and gave rise to Bin Laden throughout the 1980s, and especially how American intelligence and state officials exaggerated the existence of a secret terrorist network in order to prosecute a specific individual and inflate the myth of Bin Laden as a revolutionary figure.

The clip is from the series The Power of Nightmares, an exposé into how both the neoconservative movement in the United States and the Islamic fundamentalist movement across the Middle East have utilized fear to carry out both of their agendas:
